Shantou University

Shantou University (STU), was founded in 1981 with the approval of the State Council. It is located in the northwestern area of Shantou, a seaside city. Medical College of Shantou University has five affiliated hospitals in Shantou, with over 3,000 dedicated staff members and professional healthcare workers to take care of our patients, and a total number of around 2,200 hospital beds. In addition, it has three associated teaching hospitals across Guangdong province, including the largest hospital in southern China, and an aggregate number of approximately 4,500 hospital beds. There are another 10 teaching hospitals in the region where our students participate in clinical training on a continuous basis, providing for some 8,500 additional hospital beds.

Basic Requirements

  • Applicants should have a foreign nationality and a valid passport. Chinese immigrants should have been granted the foreign nationality for at least four years and have actually resided in the foreign country for at least two years in the past four years.
  • Applicants should at least have graduated from an accredited high school. Graduates with reasonable ACT (American College Testing) or SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) scores or equivalent college entrance examinations will be preferred.
  • Applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to have a high level of competency in English.
  • Applicants should be in good health and have a clean criminal record.
  • Literacy of Chinese will be helpful for your living and study in China.

Academic Requirements

Applicants should have successfully completed an accredited 4-year undergraduate university education (equivalent to the US or Canadian system) with better than a 3.0 grade point average that is based on a 4-point scale

In the undergraduate education, the following courses should have been taken:

  • Beginning and Advanced English (6 credit hours, according to the US system)
  • General biology I and II (6 credit hours) and Cell biology (3 credit hours), with formal laboratory work.
  • General chemistry I and II (6 credit hours), organic chemistry (3 credit hours) and analytical chemistry (3 credit hours), with formal laboratory work.
  • General physics (3 credit hours), with formal laboratory work.
  • Calculus I (3 credit hours) and statistics (3 credit hours).
  • Proficiency in the Chinese language (oral and written) is not a requirement but can be helpful.
