Uzbekistan is a Central Asian nation and former Soviet republic. It is known for its mosques, mausoleums and other sites linked to the Silk Road, the ancient trade route between China and the Mediterranean. Tashkent is the capital city of Uzbekistan. Samarkand is located in south-eastern, Uzbekistan, in the Zarefshan river valley, 135 km from Qarshi. Tajikistan border is only about 35 km from Samarkand and Tajik capital Dushanbe is 210 km away from Samarkand.
The state and official language in Samarkand, as in all Uzbekistan, is the Uzbek. Uzbek is one of the Turkic languages and the mother tongue of Uzbeks, Turkmens, Samarkandian, Iranians and most Samarkandian Arabs living in Samarkand. About 95% of signs and inscriptions in the city are in Uzbek, mostly in the Uzbek Latin alphabet.
As in the rest of Uzbekistan, Russian language is the de facto second official language in Samarkand, and about 5% signs and inscriptions in Samarkand are in this language.
Samarkand has a Mediterranean climate that closely borders on a semi-arid climate with hot, dry summers and relatively wet, variable winters that alternate periods of warm weather with periods of cold weather. July and August are the hottest months of the year, with temperatures reaching and exceeding 40 °C. Precipitation is sparse from December through April. January particularly cold, the temperature dropped to −22 °C.
Samarkand State Medical University is a higher educational university in Uzbekistan, engaged in education and training of students, medical workers and scientists as well as improving their qualifications. University is located in the city of Samarkand.
Samarkand State Medical University was founded in the year 1930 by the decision of the Government of the Republic 92 years ago. During its glorious history, university has passed a long way of becoming one of the leading medical universities not only in Uzbekistan, but also in the entire Central Asian region.
Lecture halls, classrooms, education and clinical laboratories are well equipped with the latest multimedia projectors, video recording and audio equipment to ensure quality teaching and research.
This University has international connections with Russia, US, Ukraine, South Korea and other countries. In addition to carrying out projects under grants from the Centre for science and technology, Samarkand Medical University engages in basic research in collaboration with the Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences. A knowledgeable and experienced staff is on hand to help students whenever they needed it. The pandemic has also had a major impact on education and training. Our university, like all educational institutions of the republic, has switched to distance learning since the first days of the pandemic. Since 2013, its own electronic learning platform has been created and successfully operated, and the entire learning process from April to the end of the academic year took place on it.
These faculties operate on the basis of 74 departments with 1190 classrooms equipped with modern computers and 75 multimedia classrooms. There is an Academic Lyceum in Samarkand State Medical University.
The University has established cooperation with well-known foreign universities such as Privolzhsky Research Medical University, Chuvash National University named by I. N. Ulyanov (Russia), National Louis University Graduate School of Business (Poland), and Belarusian State Medical University (Republic of Belarus) in personnel training in bachelor's and master's degrees in several specialties under the double degree program. The second higher education program is being actively trained in cooperation with the Korean partners. Also from 2020-2021 academic year, admission of students has begun from the IRP and India, who also intend to get a higher medical education at the university.
Since 2005, a new phase had begun in the history of the university. It was necessary to create decent conditions for a high-quality educational process and scientific activities of the teaching staff in order to significantly increase their impact. Electronic teaching materials are posted in all disciplines taught at the university in Uzbek, Russian, and English languages. Also, a student scientific society (SSS) functions at all departments..
