Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe. Its capital, Budapest, is bisected by the Danube River. Its cityscape is studded with architectural landmarks from Buda’s medieval Castle Hill and grand neoclassical buildings along Pest’s Andrássy Avenue to the 19th-century Chain Bridge. Turkish and Roman influence on Hungarian culture includes the popularity of mineral spas, including at thermal Lake Hévíz.
For over 650 years, Hungarian higher education has been a symbol of academic distinction. In 1367, the first university was established in Pécs, in the southern part of Hungary. There are currently 64 authorized higher education institutions in Hungary, ranging from small applied science universities to prestigious research universities, and 4 international higher education institutions licensed to operate in Hungary.
There are 6 institutes financed by the state, 37 privately funded, and 21 funded by churches. All students can choose the course that best suits their interests thanks to our schools' internationalization initiative, which has resulted in over 700 courses offered in English, German, French, and other languages.
The range of study fields students can choose from is wide:
Hungary's European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) makes sure that the procedures of teaching, learning, and evaluation are transparent by making it easier for other nations in the European Higher Education Area to recognize your credentials and accomplishments. Your grades will be guaranteed to be accepted by other European universities abroad thanks to the ECTS.
The Hungarian government established the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program in 2013 with the goal of encouraging our educational institutions to draw in international students and increasing the number of international students studying in Hungary.
