Established in 1973 as the successor to Kemerovo Pedagogical Institute, Kemerovo State University (Оéмеровский госуда́рственный университе́т) is known as KemSU. The Kemerovo Oblast's premier center for education and research has five sections located in Belovo, Anzhero-Sudzhensk, Novokuznetsk, Prokopyevsk, and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

With a total area of 120,000 m2, the main campus comprises 17 instructional laboratory and administrative buildings. There are 70 chairs spread across 20 departments. more than 10,000 students enrolled full-time. 21,000 students total, including those enrolled part-time.
