Xi’an Jiaotong University is one of the oldest universities of China and is directly administered by the Ministry of Education of China. The University formerly started as Nanyang College in 1896 in Sanghai. Later in the year 1921 it was renamed Jiaotong University. According to the State Council the main part of Jiaotong University was relocated in Xi’an in 1956. This main relocated part of the university was renamed in 1959 as Xi’an Jiaotong University.

Xi’an Jiaotong University is the only university in China which is supported by the central Government and is also a part of China’s “Project 211” and “Project 985” for the development of world-class university.

Presently, Xi’an Jiaotong University has 10 departments of study which includes medicine, economics, management, humanities, law, science, and engineering, 27 schools, education and art, 19 affiliated teaching hospitals, and 9 university colleges for undergraduates. The University has a staff of 5,982 members including full time teachers of which 6 are Nationally Distinguished Teachers, 35 are academicians of the Chinese Academy, 112 scholars of National Thousand Talents, 40 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished young scholars, 29 scholars who won the support as Innovation Team leaders, 23 National experts with outstanding contributions, 511 experts who have made outstanding contributions to the nation and receive the State Council Special Allowance.

The University has a total of 38,103 full-time students including both undergraduate and post graduate students. The university has three campuses namely the Yanta campus, Qujiang campus and the Xingqing campus.

The University has a library of 5.44 million books, 10,000 newspapers and 2000 are current periodicals. The University also has a digital library with 111 electronic resources for its students both at home and abroad.

Most of the universities of China are World Ranked. QS World ranking of Xian Jiaotong University is 307. Among the universities of China the University is ranked in top 10 positions. Two of the affiliated hospitals of the University are also ranked in top 100.

Xi’an Jiaotong University is located in the city of Xi’an, which is the capital of Shaanxi province. Xian is one of the oldest cities of China and the most populous city. It was also named in 2012 as the most emerging megacities or megalopolises in China. The city has a very moderate climate with hot summers and dry, cold winters. Snowfall occurs in winter but does not stay for long. Xian has its own airport named Xi’an Xianyang International Airport, which is the largest airport of northwestern China.

Xi’an city experiences a cold and dry winters with hot and humid summers. The maximum temperature in summer goes above 38 degree centigrade during the summers. June and July is the hottest month of the year. Rainfall also occurs in abundant during the year especially in the month of September and October. December to February is the coldest month of the year with minimum temperature of 1 degree Celsius. The average minimum temperature falls down to below -15 degree centigrade during the peak month. Snowfall occurs very less and light during the low temperature.

The Universities of China has only 1 intake in a year. Classes start from the month of September every year .So by mid of September all the students reach China. Advance booking generally starts from the month of December only. Seats are filled very fast for most of the top universities. So it is required to book in advance.

China is the only country to provide scholarship to International students. Every University in China has their own criteria for granting scholarship. Xian Jiaotong University offers scholarship every year to top 10 medical students during their study. Scholarship is not only based on the percentage of marks acquired but as a whole attendance, punctuality and other curricular activities are considered.

The University has its own hostel which provides single sharing room for the students. Separate apartment is built for all boys and girls. Biometric entry of the students is compulsory in the hostel for which a card has been issued to them based on which they have to enter into their rooms. Same biometric card is required for attendance in the classes also. Apart from biometrics, hostel warden is also available in every building besides the security guards at the main entrance. CC TV camera is installed all around the campus for effective surveillance, safety and security of the students.
