Yaroslav-the-wise Novgorod State University was established in June 30, 1993 by merging Veliky Novgorod and Pedagogical, the two oldest higher education institutions in Novgorod region. At present Novgorod State University comprises 7 scientific and educational institutions i.e. Humanities Institute, Institute of Electronic Information Systems, Institute of Continuous Pedagogical Education, Institute of Digital Economics, Management and Service, Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Polytechnic Institute. The university also includes 4 vocational colleges: Polytechnic, Humanities, Medical, and Economic. University trains specialists of higher education like bachelor, master, PhD at all levels. The university offers 42 bachelor, 17 master and 4 specialist programs. As of now, more than 10 thousand students are studying in Novgorod State University. Out of them, 6000 students are doing their bachelor, 224 are medical residents and 58 are PhD students. University also offers degree training for about 800 international students from 51 different countries in the world. There has been 64 agreements/MoUs on mutual cooperation with 22 different countries on education.
Novgorod State University provides high quality education and research to all students who are pursuing their career in this University. Out of the total number of 600 researchers and faculty members there are 129 Doctors of Sciences and 336 Candidates of Sciences. Such a high number of employees with academic degrees is ensured, among other things, with the effective work of the university Dissertation Councils in physics, philosophy and education.

In 2019, a pilot educational program “General Medicine” for English-speaking students has been started in Novgorod State University. Now General Medicines (MBBS) are being taught in English. At present there are around 80 students in Novgorod State University who are pursuing General Medicine in English.
